Local Housing Strategy

Local Housing Strategy

The Local Housing Strategy sets out the current local housing situation across all tenures and provides strategic direction for the next five years.  It covers many key housing issues including affordable housing, homelessness and property condition.  This is the second formal version of the strategy and it has been fully revised following extensive consultation with residents and agencies in Denbighshire (see Appendix A).  The strategy provides the framework to allow us to bid for funding to provide new housing through grant bids to the Welsh Assembly Government.

The housing vision for Denbighshire is that “Everyone will have the opportunity to access good quality, affordable housing designed to meet their needs now and in the future, whether they choose to rent or buy a home within Denbighshire”.

The Operational Plans contained below provide details of the completed and ongoing action in terms of housing.  These are updated annually and are essential reading for anyone interested in housing within Denbighshire.

Significant progress has been made since the first version of the LHS in 2004 including:

  • The County’s affordable housing policy which in conjunction with local housing associations and private developers has produced 40 completed affordable units, with 33 units currently being constructed
  • Development of a Low Cost Homeownership List link those needing shared ownership and/or low cost homeownership to affordable opportunities
  • The council’s homelessness team’s success in 2006/7 in eliminating the use of bed and breakfast accommodation for homeless families, except in emergencies
  • Improving older peoples’ housing options through the development of extra care and new private sector accommodation
  • The Council’s Private Sector team has introduced the highly successful Houseproud scheme and has made 450 dwellings fit, through offering grant assistance and enforcement measures
  • Housing associations and the council are investing heavily to improve the quality of their housing stock to reach Welsh Housing Quality Standard by 2012
