Climate Change

Climate Change is one of the biggest threats of the 21st century which is facing the national and international community. Local government has a key role to play in responding to Climate Change, building resilience to environmental change in our communities and preventing further negative environmental impacts from our actions. In the face of Climate Change Denbighshire has to rise and meet the challenge of developing a low carbon future. As such, the Council has agreed that Denbighshire should achieve and exceed a 3% annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions over the next 10 years.

Denbighshire County Councils response to climate change is captured in Project Gaia- DCC’s Corporate Carbon Management Strategy 2009-2020. This strategy sets out the framework to deliver a 3% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from the Council estate, fleet vehicles, waste and the business miles staff travel over the next 10 years. A series of projects will be undertaken each year to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide the Council emits as well as an on going behaviour change programme to ensure emissions reductions are sustained year on year and beyond the duration of the Carbon Management Programme.

The benefits of achieving annual reductions in carbon dioxide emissions include saving money by reducing energy and fuel bills from our estate, fleet vehicles and business travel, meeting climate change and carbon reduction regulation, raising the Council's profile to be amongst the top performing authorities and leading by example - influencing business and the community on green issues. But most importantly it will ensure the Council are doing their bit to support Denbighshire to become a sustainable, low carbon county who are committed to preventing further negative environmental impacts from our actions.
