10/04/2007 - Tourism oscars to be staged in Denbighshire

The National Tourism Awards will reveal the best of the tourism industry at a star-studded ceremony, taking place at Bodelwyddan Castle, Denbighshire on Thursday October 4, 2007.

Festivals, luxurious hotels, caravan parks, attractions and a tipi retreat are all in with a chance of winning a Tourism ‘Oscar’. Forty-six businesses from across Wales have been short-listed in 10 different categories for this year’s National Tourism Awards.

Two categories recognise the fact that the tourism industry relies on people for success, something Denbighshire's CANTATA project has been addressing recently with its customer focus courses for businesses in Denbighshire.

Tourism Minister, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, said: “The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to the continual improvement of quality in the industry, and these nominations for the National Tourism Awards are a clear signal of the efforts to drive standards ever higher in Wales. I would therefore like to congratulate these companies on being short-listed for such prestigious awards, and wish them the best of luck for the next stages.”

Denbighshire County Council lead member for Promoting Denbighshire, Councillor Sue Roberts said ' It's a real honour to have this prestigious tourism event in Denbighshire. It is particularly appropriate as we look forward to celebrating our culture as part of the North Wales 08 programme which is happening alongside Liverpool 08 as they celebrate their European Capital of Culture status.'

Jonathan Jones, Director of Tourism and Marketing for the Welsh Assembly Government, said: “We were extremely impressed by the number and quality of entries. Short-listing for each category was a tough process and it’s going to be an even tougher decision to choose just one winner for each category.  All the entrants can be proud of the fine job they are doing to promote Welsh tourism and without them we wouldn’t have the quality of product to compete in the increasingly keen global market that is tourism.”

The winners will be revealed by BBC presenter, Huw Edwards, on the evening of October 4 at Bodelwyddan Castle.
