To qualify for this symbol it is necessary to meet the five commitments listed below:-

1. interview all applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and to consider them on abilities.
2. make sure there is a system in place to discuss, at any time, but at least once a year, with disabled employees what can be done to make sure they can develop and use their abilities.
3. make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment.
4. take action to make sure that all employees develop the right level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work.
5. Each year, to review the five commitments and what has been achieved, to plan ways to improve on them and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.

The intention of this scheme is to ensure that disabled people have access to the same opportunities as other employees, not only when they first join an organisation, but at all stages of their career.  It aims to ensure that people with disabilities feel confident that their employer will be positive about their abilities.
