Councillors in Denbighshire have voted in favour of a Notice of Motion expressing a vote of no confidence in the Leader of Denbighshire, Councillor Rhiannon Hughes and the Cabinet.
At a special meeting of Denbighshire County Council, held in County Hall, Ruthin today (Monday, October 22) , 23 members voted in favour of the motion, 20 against. Four members were absent from the meeting.
The Notice of Motion, expressing a vote of no confidence, was originally signed by 13 members.
The motion stated:
'We the undersigned, as elected members of Denbighshire County Council, hereby give notice that we wish to call an extraordinary meeting of the Council with the sole purpose of voting a motion of no confidence in the Leader and Cabinet, as provided for on 7.3.5 of the constitution, We wish to note that it is regrettable that the constitution makes no provision to move a motion of no confidence in any member of the Cabinet individually and as such our petition does not necessarily reflect our lack of confidence in all members of the Cabinet.”
In accordance with the Council's constitution, the powers of the Cabinet now pass to the Chief Executive Ian Miller until a new Leader and Cabinet are in place. The date of the special council meeting to elect a leader will be announced shortly: it must be held within three weeks of today.
