10/26/2007 - Youngsters stars of the environment

Ysgol Bodnant Junior School, Prestatyn, has been announced as ‘School of the Year’ in the Your Champions’ award, run by Trinity Mirror Newspapers and ScottishPower, for its hard work in caring for the environment – not just limited to the school grounds but out in the community also.

The nine youngsters, who all belong to the school’s Eco-Club, run by teacher, Caroline May, impressed judges with their dedication and commitment to carrying out all things environmentally friendly in their school and the surrounding area.

Headteacher, Martyn Blythin, said he was extremely proud of the group and and the award was well deserved.

“When we were handed the award it was an extremely proud moment, our only regret was that the children couldn’t be present at the award ceremony so we have been out and bought them all book tokens as a ‘thank you’ for all their hard work.”

Mr Blythin explained the children recycle everything possible, including raising £500 from recycling their school ink cartidges, the funds of which have been ploughed back into running the club and setting up things like a school garden, a wormery, composting, building and putting up 18 bird boxes in the vicinity.

They have also been out litter picking along the roads just outside their school and have been commended by the local neighbourhood police team for their regular efforts.

The school is now going to try for gold in the national Eco-Schools Awards, having already won bronze and silver.
