Denbighshire County Council has expressed its delight that a brand new Tesco store will finally be built on Prestatyn High Street after years of negotiations, heralding a boost to efforts to regenerate the town.
Solicitors acting on behalf of Somerfield have informed the Council that the supermarket firm will not appeal against a recent court judgement which supported Denbighshire's decision to use its compulsory purchase powers to obtain land on behalf of Tesco, to allow the plan for a new supermarket to proceed.
Tesco had been unable to purchase the land it required, including land owned by Somerfield and requested that Denbighshire used its Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) powers to assemble all the land required for the new store.
The CPO was confirmed earlier this year, with a view to facilitating the regeneration of Prestatyn High Street.
Gareth Evans, Denbighshire's Head of Development, said: 'We are delighted at the news that Somerfield will not be appealing and this finally gives Tesco the green light to act on their planning permission and build a new store on the High Street.
“The debate has been on-going for far longer than was anticipated and Denbigshire used its compulsory purchase powers in the interest of regenerating the town centre and transforming it into a leading retail development in North Denbighshire, as well as improving the townscape.
