Councillor Hugh Evans has been confirmed as the new Leader of Denbighshire County Council.
At a special meeting held at County Hall this morning (Tuesday), councillors voted unanimously to elect Councillor Evans. He was the only candidate to be put forward for the leadership.
His nomination was signed by the following councillors:
• Jeanette Chamberlain Jones (Leader of the Labour Group)
• Michael German (Leader of Democratic Alliance of Wales)
• John Smith (Secretary of the Independent Group)
• Dewi Owens (Leader of the Conservative Group)
• Gwyneth Kensler (Leader of the Plaid Cymru Group)
• Bob Barton (non-aligned Welsh Liberal Democrat)
• Paul Marfleet (non-aligned Independent)
Councillor Evans has announced that he will take on the portfolio for Lifelong Learning, the first ever Leader in Denbighshire to take on the role during leadership.
Councillor Evans said: 'I am delighted to have been elected Leader of Denbighshire. In recent times, the Council has made significant progress in many services, including the introduction of the x2 recycling scheme, the introduction of the Customer Service Centre, spending on roads and school buildings, to name but a few.
'The key message from my presentation today was 'we unite to do good'. I firmly believe, that by working together, we really can make a difference in Denbighshire and build on the good work that is already going on. Our main priority is the implementation of the Estyn Action Plan and modernising education in Denbighshire, which will be challenging, but the Council has given its commitment to raising education standards in the county and working with schools to offer a first class education to our children and young people.
'There are other issues that we are progressing in Denbighshire, including affordable housing, the Local Development Plan and waste management.
'By working together as one, improved communication and co-operation, we can provide better services for the residents of Denbighshire and really make a difference.'
