‘Children out there need your help’ is the call to anyone in Denbighshire who has ever considered adoption.
This week, November 5th to 11th, is National Adoption Week and at present only 25 potential adoptive families are living in North Wales yet between 30 to 40 children are referred annually to the North Wales Adoption Consortium.
As a result, children in need of a permanent, loving family home are having to wait for extended periods of time before being adopted otherwise they have to be placed outside North Wales.
Sibling groups of three or more are in most desperate need, as are disabled children and those over the age of six
Denbighshire County Council’s Family Placement Team are hoping to hear from anyone who may have thought about adopting or may have disregarded the idea to have a rethink.
They say a lot of myths surround the idea of adopting – and they certainly are most usually myths and urge people to not think because you’re over 40 or even 50 that there is not a child out there who could benefit from joining your family; people of all ages can be considered.
There is no typical ‘adoptive family’, however, applicants do all have undergo an extensive process with police checks and references all taken up.
The adoption team is available to help throughout the process with plenty of support and advice for potential adoptive families.
The team will be running two open evenings, the first at the Deeside Leisure Centre on November 13th and the second at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, on November 15th – both will have sessions between 2pm and 4pm and again between 6pm and 8pm.
For an informal chat, the Denbighshire Family Placement Team can be contacted on 01824 712800.
More information on adopting is also available on Denbighshire County Council’s website at www.denbighshire.gov.uk under the A-Z listing.
