11/08/2007 - Denbighshire’s culture wins over American travel writers

Denbighshire had the opportunity recently to show off its tourist gems to a group of seven North American travel writers.

The writers represented publications covering the US and Canada and were on a five day field trip to North Wales as part of the Society of American Travel Writers’ Convention in Manchester.   Denbighshire secured three days of the trip, with the other two days shared between other areas of north Wales.

In Ruthin, the writers learnt about the Craft Centre’s multi million pound redevelopment and met artist Cefyn Burgess, reputed not only for his design work and woven cloths, but also for a series of works based on Welsh chapels.

After a visit to Nantclwyd y Dre, the group were impressed by the scenery around Moel Famau where they heard about the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Offa’s Dyke National Trail.

After a brief visit to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, they arrived in Llangollen to experience the historic setting at Plas Newydd.   A presentation on the International Eisteddfod was followed by a walk to Castell Dinas Bran.  In the evening they delighted in the exquisite tones of the Froncycyllte Male Voice Choir.

A tour of Bodelwyddan Castle was on the agenda next morning before the group moved onto Conwy.

Denbighshire County Council’s Head of Tourism, Heritage and Culture, Paul Murphy, said “We have been able to showcase the best of Denbighshire to the cream of American travel writers and demonstrate just why Denbighshire is rapidly becoming known as THE County of Culture in Wales.'
