11/20/2007 - Countdown to Foryd Footbridge vote

The last few days are ticking away before the votes close on whether a new footbridge in Rhyl will become a reality.

Denbighshire County Council has been looking into the feasibility of a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Foryd Harbour, Rhyl, which would from part of the national cycle route.

Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity,  has come up with a bid called ‘Connect 2’ which involves 79 similar projects to the one proposed in Rhyl.  They are bidding for a single grant of £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund that would fund all 79 projects across the UK.

Currently, the only way over the Foryd Harbour, linking Rhyl with Kinmel Bay, is the grade two listed 'Blue Bridge'.

One solution under consideration is a new foot and cycle bridge over the River Clwyd, linking West Parade and the Harbour - this would form part of the on-going developments in West Rhyl.

There are five other bids in the running, with the winner announced in a public television vote this December.
Denbighshire and Sustrans are urging people to get behind the project.

To register your support, please visit: www.sustransconnect2.org.uk or text Connect2 to 80010.  Connect2 will then be able to keep you updated about its progress. (Calls to 80010 will be charged at standard network rates.)
