Adult Placement Scheme

1. I am an adult with a learning disability, visual or sensory impairment, or a mental illness. What would an Adult Placement mean for me?

An adult placement can be:

somewhere to live
somewhere to stay for a short break
somewhere to go for support during the day
someone who will offer you support to live in your own home

In every adult placement you are helped and supported by someone called an adult placement carer who will share their home with you and include you as part of their family.

There are lots of different kinds of adult placement carers. Some adult placement carers are couples some are single people. Some have children.  Some provide help and support to more than one person.

If you would like to know more about Adult Placements, please read the attached service user guide.

2. I am interested in becoming an Adult Placement Carer. How can I find out more?

Adult Placements provide accommodation for vulnerable adults who are over 18 years of age in the homes of specially recruited people living in the community, called Adult Placement Carers. The carers are assessed for their suitability, and an independent panel is responsible for making sure suitable people are appointed as carers. Adult Placement Carers provide support in their own homes to service users for a fee which is agreed in writing before the placement begins.

Adult Placements are available to adults between 18 and 65, male or female, who have a learning disability, a physical or sensory impairment, or a mental illness, and could also be appropriate for adults over the age of 65. Placements can be long term or short term, and can include respite care, outreach services and other community based services.

Placements are planned so that they meet individual needs, and give service users the chance to reach their full potential. Carers and service users receive support and guidance to make sure they get the most out of the experience.
