Ysgol Dinas Bran
Ysgol Dinas Bran

Introduction

Ysgol Dinas Bran is a Secondary School in Llangollen that caters for 11-18 year old pupils. The existing school consists of a number of buildings dating back to the 1930’s and the site has been added to on an ad-hoc basis throughout the last 70 years.

The school currently utilises the main school hall to serve school dinners from a kitchen and servery located at the hall stage level, it is the only High School site in the County without a dedicated dining facility.

This project will see the construction of a new build extension containing a dining hall and kitchen along with significant refurbishment of existing space within the 4 storey maths block and conversion of the old kitchen area into new music and practice rooms.

Key Elements of the scheme

The project will be worked as 3 distinct phases:

• Phase 1a will see the existing mobiles to the rear of the CDT block demolished and refurbishment of the existing sandwich concourse into 2 permanent classroom spaces of 53.2m2 each, this phase will also see conversion of the site from oil to gas including installation of new gas supply and boilers.

• Phase 1b will see construction of a new build extension in the area formerly occupied by the mobiles, it will contain a dining hall, kitchen and sanitation facilities along with a foyer linking to the existing 4 storey block. Included in Phase 1b will be installation of a lift that will facilitate access to the new dining level as well as all other floors in the block.

• Phase 1c will see the old 6th form changing rooms on the 2nd floor of the 4 storey block refurbished into 2 permanent classroom spaces of 35.2m2 and 72.5m2, the equivalent area on the third floor will also be refurbished to create 2 permanent classroom spaces of 35.2m2 and 72.5m2, in addition the now vacated old kitchen and servery areas will be refurbished to create 2 new music rooms along with 2 new practice rooms.

In addition to the above, a sprinkler system will be installed that will serve the new build and refurbished areas of the existing building.  The system has been designed so it can be readily extended in the future.
