07/28/2008 - Vandals ruin summer splash time

Vandals have caused damage over night to the expansion joint at Rhyl's Drift Park Paddling Pool. The damage has left an inch thick hole across one section of the floor resulting in the closure of the pool on health and safety grounds.

Ian Olson, Coastal Facilities Officer, said "On what is possibly going to be the hottest day of the year, lifeguards are having to turn away hundreds of families from the facility. Many children have been upset and this has ruined their day."

Emergency repairs are currently being undertaken to repair the damage, but the pool level has to be dropped and then brought back up, as well as ensuring chemical levels are adequate before the facility can be re-opened.

It is hoped that the site will re-open tomorrow (Tuesday).
