The Llangollen Railway is planning to extend train services to Corwen, about 2½ miles beyond its present terminus at Carrog.
The Llangollen Railway Company has retained consultants to help prepare an application for a Transport and Works Act Order to authorise construction and operation of the new section of railway. An Environmental Impact Assessment has been prepared and will form part of the application to the Welsh Assembly Government for the Order.
A first round of public consultation, including a public meeting in Corwen, took place in spring and summer 2007. As a result of those consultations a number of changes to the proposals have been necessary in the Corwen area.
The main change is the need to remove part of the old embankment of the former railway line to Ruthin beside the River Dee in order to provide an extension of flood plain to compensate for the possible effect of re-opening the railway on the existing flood plain.
Other changes are minor and include an alteration to the layout of the proposed access road to the Dŵr Cymru sewage treatment plant in order to permit access by articulated lorries and provision for access by anglers to the south bank of the river to the east of Corwen. A path is to be provided beside the railway for a short distance to the east of Corwen where there is evidence that the old tracked is used by walkers.
A public meeting is to be held at the Sports Pavilion, Green Lane, Corwen at 7:00 PM on Monday 11th August 2008. Representatives of Denbighshire County Council, the Llangollen Railway and their consultants will be present to explain the changes to the proposals. All are welcome to attend the meeting.
Copies of the current plans and an explanation of the changes made to the proposals since summer 2007 will be available for inspection at the local libraries in Corwen and Llangollen from Monday 4th August.
