07/29/2008 - Council concern about Post Office closures

Councillors have expressed concern and disappointment over the proposed closures of four post offices and the replacement of two with an outreach service in Denbighshire

Post Office Ltd announced today (Tuesday) that it proposes to close the post offices at Grange Road, Rhyl, Brynhedydd, Rhyl, Maes Caenog, Clocaenog and Ruthin (Llanfwrog Post Office).

Further proposals to replace two existing post offices with outreach services have also been put forward for the branches at Gwyddelwern, Corwen and The Stores, Llandrillo, Corwen. These changes mean the services may be offered from an outreach van or in other existing local venues such as the village hall, pub or shop.

Councillors were concerned about the impact of these changes on the viability of the shops where the post offices are presently located.

The closure programme is a result of UK Government policy which will see 2,500 post offices shut, which equates to around 20% of the network.

County, town and community councillors should be contacted for their views so they can be taken into account in the Denbighshire’s response.

The consultation period runs from today, July 29, to September 15 but closes before the next full council meeting and therefore Denbighshire’s final response will be agreed at the Cabinet meeting on September 9 and then forward to Post office Ltd.

Anyone wishing to express their views direct to Post Office Ltd should write to Steve Geraty, Network Development Manager. C/O National Consultation Team, FREEPOST CONSULTATION TEAM or by email to consultation@postoffice.co.uk. The customer helpline is 08457 22 33 44.
