Over 200 artists from around the world applied for the brief to produce three public art pieces in Prestatyn, a key project for the town which has been successful in attracting an Arts Council for Wales grant of £72,000.
Artists local to Prestatyn as well as those as far afield as Singapore expressed an interest in the project which is a joint partnership project for Denbighshire County Council, Prestatyn Town Council, The Countryside Council for Wales and Friends of Prestatyn Railway.
In total, 57 individual artists/consortia sent in their portfolios of work. Through a short-listing process, nine artists have been selected to develop designs or maquettes.
The pieces of art will act as ‘gateways’ to the town centre. The first commission (comprising of two pieces of art) is to be located either side of the Prestatyn station on the High Street and on Bastion Road to welcome passengers using the mainline London to Holyhead railway to visit the town.
Another piece will be located adjacent to the Prestatyn Central Beach promenade - the starting point of the 177 mile long Offa’s Dyke National Trail – and alongside the SUSTRANS cycle route. This area has attracted large-scale regeneration investment recently and the last phase of the project will complement the art.
The third piece of art will be located at Hillside Gardens lying along the trail as it drops down from the Clwydian Range (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) towards Prestatyn town.
The designs/ maquettes will be on public display in Prestatyn library from August 15 to 29. The public is invited to view the designs and provide their comments.
Interviews with the artists will be held in early September with installation in 2009.
