08/13/2008 - Llangollen's Plas Newydd Awarded Wales in Bloom

Plas Newydd, once the home of the Ladies of Llangollen, scooped a top award in the national Wales in Bloom competition, winning first prize in the public buildings and grounds category.

The house and gardens are now owned and managed by Denbighshire County Council and the gardens have undergone a complete restoration with the help of a match funded grant of £900,000 from the Heritage Lottery fund.

The beautiful grounds are maintained by gardeners Gary Lovelock and Ian Dunderdale, and are complete with a parterre and topiary, Georgian shrubbery, woodland dell and stream with drystone walling.

Lead member for tourism and culture, Councillor David Thomas, praised the gardening team for their success.

“This has been a fantastic team effort by everyone involved at Plas Newydd and I am delighted to see their hard work has paid off with a top award in the prestigious Wales in Bloom competition.”
