08/15/2008 - A Level students meet the grade

A Level results in Denbighshire have improved at a faster rate than the Welsh average, an analysis of the results has revealed.

The proportion of A grades gained by Denbighshire pupils was 20.2%, an increase of 0.8% on the 2007 figures. There was no increase in the Welsh average during the same period.

The pass rate (A-E grade) in Denbighshire also went up faster than the Welsh average. In Denbighshire the 96.9% pass rate (A-E grades) was up by 0.7% on the 2007 figures.  The increase in the Welsh pass rate in 2008 compared to 2007 was 0.5%

The A-C grade pass rate in Denbighshire in 2008 was 71.6%, up 1.1% on the previous year. At the moment, there are no comparable figures for Wales from the Welsh Joint Education Committee.

Leader of Denbighshire, Councillor Hugh Evans, who is also Cabinet Lead Member for Lifelong Learning, said: “Further analysis of the results received on Thursday has shown that the improvement in the Denbighshire results is higher, compared with the average increase across Wales. This is a step in the right direction.

“Whilst we are delighted that results have improved, we also acknowledge there is more work to do on improving these results further, and the Council continues to put modernising and improving education at the heart of its work.

“The commitment from schools, staff and councillors is evident and we hope the improvement in results this year is further confirmation of progress of raising standards in our schools and delivering our vision of providing a first class education service in Denbighshire.”
