08/18/2008 - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang challenge for Council worker's team

A member of Denbighshire Social Services staff will be taking to the road later this month for a charity ride with a difference.

Loraine Jackson, her son and two friends will take part in the 'Banger' run, known as the Sucata Run  from Rouen in Normandy, Northern France. They will drive 2000km across France, Spain and ending in Cabon da Roca in Portugal. Their epic journey begins  on Thursday, August 21 and finishes on Bank Holiday Sunday.

The team members have purchased a cheap 'banger' for the race and will travel to Dover before crossing to Calais and the onward journey to Normandy.

They will be raising funds for the Gemin- i charity which works towards providing education to children in developing countries.

Loraine, who is based with Denbighshire Social Services in Ruthin, but lives in Treuddyn,  said: "We take education for granted in this country but some of the children in the developing countries need to work a full day before starting school. Quite often, school is the only place where these children have a hot meal. That's why we have decided to support this worthy cause in our very unique way and I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun en route.

"I do have mixed feelings about the challenge.  I'm really pleased to be able to provide support, but we will need to sleep in tents during the race to keep down costs and it really will be a race against time to get to the finishing line."

The team will be one of 87 groups competing in the four day rally and teams will need to take photographs along the way as proof of taking part.  There is also a prize for the team that needs to push their vehicle the furthest.
