Around 700 hundred people made their way up to the summit of Moel Famau on Saturday, August 16 to join in the celebrations of the official unveiling of the Superlambanana.
The Moel Famau Lambanana was unveiled during the Big Walk event, arranged to celebrate the connection between Liverpool and the Clwydian Range as the city celebrates its status as European Capital of Culture.
As an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on the city’s doorstep, offering an escape from the pressures of modern life, the Clwydian Range has a strong cultural connection to Liverpool.
Back in 1926, the Crosville bus company started a service from Liverpool to Loggerheads which brought thousands of day trippers, creating a link that still exists today. During the war the area also provided a home to many evacuees. More recently, many thousands of Merseysiders have spent a time at Liverpool City Council's Education Centre, Colomendy in Loggerheads and will have walked to the Jubilee Tower at the summit of Moel Famau as part of their stay.
Some of those children joined the Big Walk. One Aigburth resident who first visited as a child and has made regular visits to Moel Famau ever since, said that she always felt that Moel Famau was “ a very special piece of Liverpool.”
Walkers and superlambanana ‘spotters’ were mesmerized by the sounds of Liverpool’s Batala Brazilian style drummers who have previously performed all over Britain. After their performance, one of the drummers said that “…..Moel Famau is the most beautiful location in which we have performed so far!”
Councillor David Thomas, Denbighshire’s Cabinet lead member for Regeneration, said: “There was a real carnival atmosphere up on Moel Famau for the event and all partners involved are delighted to be able to celebrate the close links between the region and Liverpool.
“We hope that people will take the opportunity to come back to the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and sample what this beautiful region has on offer.”
Claire Mc Colgan, Executive Producer at the Liverpool Culture Company said “I think it’s fantastic, what a great event; it was great to see people from Liverpool there, loads of people from Wales and the Superlambanana has really captured people’s imagination in the colours of the heather, it looks so fantastic on top of a mountain. ”
The event was organised by Denbighshire and Flintshire County Councils who jointly manage Moel Famau and the Clwydian Range AONB. Weather permitting, it is hoped that Moelfamalambanana will stay at the summit of Moel Famau until the end of August.
