08/22/2008 - Warning over Spanish lottery scam

Residents are being warned about Spanish lottery scams targeting people living in Denbighshire.
Denbighshire County Council’s Trading Standards Team has been contacted numerous times about letters claiming to be from organisations such as the El Gordo - the Spanish National Lottery.
The mailshot claims the recipient has potentially won a large sum of money and should contact a claim agent to arrange to get their prize transferred to their bank account.
Personal details are then requested, which could lead to the recipient becoming a victim of fraud, with no money being subsequently received.
Tony Young, Denbighshire’s Principal Trading Standards Officer said: “This letter is a scam and should be ignored.  It is nearly impossible to win any competition, or lottery, that you have not entered. Sadly it is often the most vulnerable people who fall prey to these scams and I would urge everyone to be cautious before giving out information. The El Gordo Lottery is the official Spanish lottery and it is only open to Spanish residents. The perpetrators of this scam are not connected, in any way, to the real El Gordo lottery. No bona fide lottery, or competition, would demand up-front fees. Never send any money, or give out your personal financial details, in response to any unsolicited call or mailing.”
The Welsh Heads of Trading Standards have secured funding to create a dedicated  team, known as the ‘Scambusters’, to focus on such scams, most of which operate from abroad.
If you have received one of these letters, or anything you suspect may be a scam, and would like further advice, please contact Consumer Direct Wales on 08454 040506 (English Line), or 08454 040505 (Welsh Line)
