Alley Gates Public Consultation

We are considering installing further alley gates in Denbighshire. The process used is that local residents or elected members have asked for gates in response to problems in their locality. We have reviewed the area and decided that alley gates could help. This public consultation is about letting you, the community, know what is being considered and allowing you to make representations. A copy of the draft orders together with plans showing the footpath affected can be viewed on web site  and at Denbighshire ‘One stop Shops’ at Corwen, Denbigh, Llangollen, Prestatyn,  Rhuddlan, Rhyl, Ruthin and St Asaph.

If you wish to make representations as to whether or not a Gating Order should be made, you may do so, by e-mailing community.safety@denbighshire.gov.uk or in writing to:
Denbighshire County Council
Wynnstay Road
Ruthin

LL15 1YN

Consultation period closes on 7 December 2008.

Alley Gates across alleyways is a form of situational crime prevention that aims to reduce the opportunities for crimes such as burglary, car theft, drug dealing, criminal damage and anti social behaviour. Many alleys in recent times have become known as 'Rat Runs' and can be described as the 'arteries of crime'.
In Denbighshire we already have over 30 alleygates in various locations around Rhyl. The first gate was in place by December 2003, and during that period Denbighshire has seen a significant reduction in crime. Alleygates are one of the contributing factors to Denbighshire being one of the best performing Community Safety Partnerships over the last 3 years with a reduction of more than 40% or in the last 12 months almost 2,700 fewer victims of crime  during 2007 / 2008 than during 2003 / 2004.
There are a number of other advantages in addition to reducing the levels of crime which include:-
• Reduced opportunities for youths to cause annoyance - This could mean anything from drinking in the alleys to taking drugs.
• Fewer problems of dog fouling by stray dogs and by some uncaring dog owners.
• Safe play areas for children
• Improved community spirit giving a sense of ownership of the alleys and recovering areas that were seen as no go areas especially after dark.
