Policies for Modernising Education in Denbighshire

Modernising education – help make a difference

Denbighshire County Council is committed to providing a first class education for all children and young people in the County. As part of this commitment, the Council has agreed that modernising education provision is a priority because we recognise the importance of having school buildings, learning environments and resources that meet the needs of 21st Century Wales. We know that we have to change and modernise education provision in the County as improvements in education cannot be sustained without changes to the way education is provided. We have a responsibility to ensure that our schools are sustainable and fit for purpose. Schools need to be able to provide the best possible learning experience so that children and young people in Denbighshire have the widest opportunities available to them and are able to reach their full potential.

Many of our schools were built to meet the needs of education in the 19th Century. The way that we use school buildings has and will continue to change; new curriculum requirements (for example the foundation phase, 14 – 19 pathways), developments in ICT (for example the use of whiteboards, wireless technology) or the potential for community use mean that our schools have to change and we need to keep pace if we are to meet the needs of modern life. Retaining the status quo is no longer an option for us in Denbighshire if we want to provide a first class education for our children and young people.

Informal consultation has already taken place with the county’s headteachers and their comments and feedback have been fed into the draft documents.

The policies identify models for primary and secondary school organisation, and looks at a vast range of issues, including surplus and deficit places, infant and junior school amalgamation, community use of schools, mobile accommodation, promoting bilingualism, headteacher vacancy, admissions and transport and future use of surplus assets.

We would like to hear your views on these policies.  The deadline for responses is January 12th.
