English as an additional language

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Service is a team of specialist teachers and teaching assistants that can provide support to minority ethnic pupils in Denbighshire and Conwy whose first language is other than English or Welsh.

More information

The EAL Service provides support by;

  • Assessing and monitoring learners’ English language ability using the Welsh Government’s 5 Stage model 
  • Working with class/subject teachers to identify EAL targets
  • Providing one to one or small group support for EAL learners in school
  • Giving training and advice to schools and other services on good practice and classroom strategies
  • Providing support for GCSE First Language exams
  • Assisting schools/ other services in meetings with parents
