Home Improvement Loans

The Welsh Government offers short to medium term, interest free loans to help eligible owners improve the condition of their residential properties.

These loans can only be applied for through the local council.

Who can apply?

You could be eligible for a Home Improvement Loan if you own a property that is in poor condition, and you are looking to carry out work to make it warm, safe and/or secure.

Loans are available to:

  • owner occupiers
  • landlords (individuals only)

You must be intending to occupy the property, or rent it out and the property must be registered with HM Land Registry at the time of application.

What could I be entitled to?

You could get a loan of between £1,000 and £35,000 per property or unit of accommodation.

Owner occupiers must repay the loan within a maximum term of seven years.  Landlords must repay the loan within a maximum of five years.

All applications will be subject to:

  • £500 administration fee, to cover our costs in administering the loan
  • an affordability assessment, to make sure you can afford the loan repayments

Please note that these loans are discretionary. We cannot guarantee that you will be offered a loan until you receive formal notice that your application has been approved.
